LOS ANGELES — Victor Miller, the acclaimed screenwriter who launched one of the most influential horror franchises in cinema history by writing the original 1980 slasher classic Friday the 13th, has passed away at the age of 86.
Miller passed away on Monday, August 31, in Alameda, California. His death was confirmed by his son, Ian Miller, in a heartfelt tribute shared on social media.
“Yesterday my father, Victor Miller, went to his final reward,” Ian Miller wrote. “He was almost always the smartest, funniest person in whatever room he was in. He inspired in me, and many others, a love of photography, music, and storytelling. He had a helluva run and will be missed dearly.”
The family also revealed that a special celebration of life will take place in November 2026 — fittingly, on Friday the 13th.

Creating Camp Crystal Lake: The Birth of a Slasher Icon
Teaming up with director Sean S. Cunningham, Miller set out to develop a horror movie inspired by the runaway independent success of John Carpenter’s Halloween. Set against the eerie backdrop of Camp Crystal Lake, the 1980 film followed camp counselors being stalked and murdered one by one. While Miller did not write the subsequent sequels, his original script introduced Pamela Voorhees (played by Betsy Palmer) as the vengeful mother and created the tragic backstory of her drowned son, Jason Voorhees.

However, after years of legal contention, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in Miller’s favor in 2021, officially recognizing him as an independent contractor and granting him the U.S. copyright to his original script and characters. The landmark ruling reshaped how copyright termination battles are fought across Hollywood.

While horror fans revere him for Camp Crystal Lake, Miller built a prolific, decades-long career as a celebrated daytime television writer.
